Come on a journey with us into your imagination and discover your creativity!
Birdhouse was established in 2009, with the aim of engaging more children and families in arts and culture. We strive to close a gap by widening equality of access to culture, particularly for those living in areas of low cultural opportunity.
We began by launching an exciting children’s touring theatre programme which sees some of the UK’s most outstanding and imaginative children’s theatre companies perform in local spaces in North East Lincolnshire.
Since its beginnings, Birdhouse has gone from strength to strength, having now engaged more than 50,000 children and their families in a wide range of cultural experiences, from theatre, live music and interactive story-telling, to workshops and family festivals. We work with a range of quality national and regional artists and connect children directly to their work, while offering opportunities alongside this for children to unlock their own imaginations and creativity.
In 2019 we engaged 5870 children and adults in arts and cultural activity, connecting them to 57 artists and their work.
We aim to help embed culture as part of everyday family life and work to develop children’s relationship with culture from an early age, supporting parents with our friendly and welcoming approach. Our projects are carefully programmed to be inspiring, yet accessible.
We continually engage existing and new audiences, having presented more than sixty different shows from a diverse range of companies in church halls, community spaces, shopping centres, libraries and a range of outdoor spaces!
Our family-friendly offer quickly expanded into providing a wide range of activity, including the Birdhouse Family Festival – featuring indoor and outdoor shows, street theatre, live music and interactive story-telling hosted in the resort of Cleethorpes.
More recently we have loved introducing nature and well-being related activity, under our Birdhouse Explorers strand and in 2019 launched Light Gardens, Cleethorpes, a new family festival hosting innovative and imaginative light installations.
We have recently introduced the opportunity for children to gain an Arts Award – a national qualification – through participating in Birdhouse activity, with more information soon to be available.
In 2019, 100% of respondents said they would come to a Birdhouse activity again!
